Principles of Practice, Volume II

Integrated Operations

Nothing Fell, and the Seams That Break Anyway

Front cover of Principles of Practice, Volume II: Integrated Operations.
Cover, Volume II

The belief that most operational failure happens at handoffs is widely held and poorly sourced. Volume II traces the statistic behind it until it runs out, then follows one business through the same failure at three positions.

What Volume II covers

Two functions running incompatible definitions of a qualified lead, a company whose correction to the problem made it worse, and a fulfillment function planning against a number that had been fixed out from under it.

It covers the four definitions that have to be shared across a business, an instrument for measuring operating cadence that runs on messages already sent, and what happened when the fix worked and cost two quarters of churn.

The argument

The problem is not the handoff. It is the shared understanding at the handoff.

Or in the form the anchor case actually demonstrates: the work is rarely dropped. It is done twice, to two definitions nobody reconciled, and the second pass lands on somebody who is already finished with you.

This is not a book about handoffs, communication or collaboration. It is a book about shared definitions, and that distinction is the whole of it.

What this book is not

Purchase of this book is not required in order to sit any National Board of Operations Professionals assessment and confers no advantage. The assessment is built from the published standard, not from this book.

The author of this book does not write assessment items, does not see them, does not sit on scoring, and does not adjudicate individual results. Items come from the standards committee.

It is a way to learn the work. It is not a way to pass.

Where it sits

Volume II maps to the Integrated Operations endorsement. Volume I covers the core practice. Volume III covers Marketing Operations, Volume IV Revenue and Sales Operations, Volume V Customer Success Operations, and Volume VI AI and Automation Operations. All six are published.

This is a first edition, written before the endorsement data exists. A second edition of each volume follows once it does, carrying a new identifier, because the change will be substantial rather than cosmetic. What these volumes encode is current practice, not final domain weighting.

See the full series on the books, or read The Operator Standard that assessments are actually built from.
