NBOP-CP · The core credential
For people who already run operations.
NBOP-CP certifies practice that already exists. It is not a course, not a career change programme, and not a way into the field. You have to be doing the work before we will assess you at it.
The eligibility check takes about a minute. No account, no email field, and nothing you enter is stored.
Domains of practice, published in full and free to read before you pay anything.
Once, on acceptance. No subscription, no annual maintenance fee.
Term. Recertification means sitting the assessment again, not paying a renewal.
Every credential has a permanent verification URL that anyone can check, free.
What it costs
Once, on acceptance · three year term
- The assessment
- The credential and certificate, if you pass
- Your listing in the public register
- A permanent verification URL for employers
- The right to use the NBOP-CP designation
- Appeals, which are free by design
- Preparation material is not included, because it is not required
- No annual fee, no membership, no renewal charge
Purchase of NBOP preparation material is not required in order to be eligible to sit the NBOP-CP assessment, and does not guarantee a passing result.
The assessment is built from the published standard, not from any book. This sits here, in the buying flow, rather than in terms and conditions, because that is what makes the separation real rather than decorative.
Free, permanently, to anyone: the standard itself, the eligibility check, the public register, verification of any certificate number, and appeals. A body that charges you to question its own decision has an incentive it should not have.
What NBOP-CP certifies
Eight domains. Not eight subjects to revise, eight things an organisation needs working at once in order to see its own state and change it.
Process architecture
How work is designed, sequenced and handed off, and what happens at the seams.
Role design and accountability
Who owns which outcome, and who is permitted to change how it is produced.
Measurement and reporting
What the organisation can perceive about itself, and how much of it is true.
Operating cadence
The rhythm at which the business looks at itself and decides something.
Capacity and resourcing
What the organisation can afford to spend in people and in hours to act.
Financial operations
Unit economics, the cash consequences of operating choices, and the controls around them.
Systems and tooling
The instruments the work runs on, and whether they encode the process or fight it.
Change and adoption
Whether a decision becomes a different reality, or an announcement.
The relative weight of each domain in the assessment is being set by a job task analysis of practising operators rather than by us. Until that closes, the standard states equal provisional weighting and says so plainly. You can take part in it here.
Who can sit it
Three criteria. They are arithmetic, they are applied by the same code for everyone, and they are published before you answer anything.
- At least two years holding accountability for how work gets done. Not doing the work. Being accountable for how it is done.
- That accountability current, or ended within the last 24 months.
- Personal accountability in at least four of the eight domains. Depth in one is not what this certifies.
None of the following is required, and none of it is asked for: a degree of any kind in any subject, a particular job title, a particular company size, membership of anything, or a course from us or from anyone else.
Whichever way it comes out, you leave with your own accountability mapped across all eight domains. That map is the useful part and it is yours either way.
The assessment
What is decided, and what is not yet, stated separately. A body that is vague about the difference is telling you something.
Decided, and it is policy rather than preference
- Scenario based, not recall based. Items describe a business and ask you to diagnose it. There are no vocabulary questions, because knowing the definition of operating cadence is not the skill being certified.
- Written by practitioners, not by the author of the books. Item writers are drawn from the standards committee. The person who writes the preparation material does not write the questions and does not see them.
- Delivered remotely and proctored. No test centre, no travel.
- Cut score set by a formal standard setting study, not by picking a round number. The method and the panel are published.
- Sat again to recertify. Three years, then the assessment again. There is no continuing education credit route, because credits certify attendance.
Set after the job task analysis closes
Item count, time limit, the weight of each domain and the passing standard are all downstream of the analysis. Publishing them now would mean inventing them, and then quietly changing them later.
Published before the first assessment is sat
These are commitments, not aspirations, and you should hold NBOP to them.
- The examination blueprint, showing every domain and its weight, traceable to the job task analysis.
- The standard setting summary, showing how the cut score was arrived at and by whom.
- The code of professional conduct and the testing code of conduct.
- The pass rate, stated with the raw numbers rather than as a percentage on its own, every year.
- The appeals procedure, and the count of appeals heard and upheld.
What holding it actually does
A certificate that only its holder can produce is worth very little to the person deciding whether to hire them. So the credential lives in a public register rather than in a PDF.
Employers can find you
Holders are listed in the register and searchable by sector, region and domain strength. Listing is on by default and you can turn it off. Per-domain scores are off by default and you can turn them on.
Employers can check you without asking you
Every credential has a permanent verification URL. Anyone can check it, free, with no account, without contacting you and without contacting us. Bulk verification is a plain request with no key required.
Endorsements
One credential, then the niche you actually work in stacked on top of it.
An endorsement is not a second certification and it does not exist on its own. It sits on NBOP-CP and says that the general practice was applied inside a specific function. The designation carries a letter for the endorsement, so a marketing operations holder writes NBOP-CPM.
Marketing Operations
The demand engine as a system rather than a set of campaigns.

All endorsements
What each one asserts, what it covers, and the evidence required.
Compare
Endorsements require a current NBOP-CP. They cannot be bought first and they lapse when the core credential does.
Preparation
NBOP writes books. NBOP does not require them, and the assessment is not built from them.
That distinction is the whole reason a certification governing board exists inside this organisation, and it is worth being precise about how it is enforced rather than just asserting it.
- The standard is published free and in full. Everything the assessment covers is readable without paying anything.
- Item writers come from the standards committee and are not the author of the books.
- The author of the books does not see items, does not sit on scoring, and does not adjudicate individual results.
- There is no version of the assessment that is easier if you bought something.
The Operator Standard is the book series that teaches the domains. It is being written now, one volume for the core practice and one for each endorsement niche. It is a way to learn the work. It is not a way to pass.
The standard, the books and the item bank are revised on a six month release cycle, with version end-of-life dates published in advance in the changelog. The convention across established credentialing bodies is a review interval of three to seven years. Operations practice does not move at that speed, and a credential that lags its own field by five years certifies history.
Who should not bother
Published as loudly as the rest, because a standard that is vague about who it excludes is not a standard.
- You have held accountability for how work gets done for less than two years.
- You held it, but the last time was more than two years ago.
- Your accountability sits in fewer than four of the eight domains.
- You are looking for a credential that will get you into operations. This one certifies practice that already exists. It does not create it.
- You want a course. There is not one to sell you.
- You want a credential you can quietly drop if the result is unflattering. Every credential issued is publicly verifiable forever, including the ones that expire and the ones that get revoked.
Questions
Is this accredited?
Not yet, and any body telling you otherwise about a credential this new is lying to you. Accreditation under ISO/IEC 17024 or the NCCA standards requires a job task analysis, a published blueprint, a formal standard setting study and a period of operating history. NBOP is building against those requirements in the open, in that order, and the artefacts are being published as they are produced rather than at the end.
Why is there no course?
There will be books, and later there may be courses. There will never be a required one. The moment passing the assessment depends on buying something, the credential stops certifying practice and starts certifying purchase, and every employer eventually works that out.
What happens if I fail?
You get the domain level breakdown of your result, you can sit it again after a waiting period, and you can appeal at no cost. Failed attempts are not published and are not in the register. Only credentials that were issued appear publicly.
Can my employer verify this without contacting me?
Yes, and that is the point. Every credential has a permanent public URL. Anyone can check whether it is current, expired or revoked, free, with no account. If a credential is revoked the record stays visible and says so.
Do I need a degree?
No. No degree, no title, no company size, no membership. The eligibility rule is about accountability held, not about credentials already collected.
What is the difference between this and a PMP or a Six Sigma belt?
Those certify a method. NBOP-CP certifies the general practice of running a business operation, across all eight domains, regardless of which method you use inside it. Several adjacent bodies certify parts of this work and several do it well. None is scoped to cross-functional business operations, which is the gap this exists to close.
When can I apply?
Not yet. The eligibility check, the register and verification are live now. Applications open once the job task analysis reaches its published floor of 120 eligible responses and the blueprint is set. The fastest way to make that happen sooner is to take part in the analysis.
Status. NBOP is in formation. The eligibility rule, the public register and verification are live. Applications to sit the assessment are not open, and the $695 fee above is the published price for when they are, not a charge anyone has been asked to pay.
Two things worth doing today
Neither costs anything and neither asks for an account.
Check whether the criteria fit you. Then, if the standard is something you would want to be measured against, help decide what is in it. The body of knowledge is being set by the people who do the work.
