Three doors
React as normal, do the opposite, or do nothing. Consider all three, out loud, before choosing.

When something arrives that demands a response, the operation has a default. The default is usually correct and it is always fast, and speed is exactly the condition under which the Einstellung effect operates. The practice is to name three options before choosing any of them. React as normal. What would we do here by default, and what is that default optimised for? Naming it is most of the value, because a default that has never been said out loud has never been examined. Do the opposite. Not because the opposite is right, but because articulating it reveals the assumption the default rests on. And do nothing. The genuinely underused door. What happens if we let this run for two more weeks and watch? Often it resolves itself, or it recurs in a way that identifies the cause. This takes about ninety seconds. Use it on the fast decisions, not the hard ones.

Do the opposite. Not because the opposite is right, but because articulating it reveals the assumption the default rests on. If the default is to add resource, the opposite is to remove it, and the reason that sounds absurd is a piece of information about what you believe.
Do nothing. The genuinely underused door. What happens if we let this run for two more weeks and watch? Often the answer is that it resolves itself, or that it recurs in a way that identifies the cause, and either outcome is worth more than an intervention made on the first instance with no baseline.
This takes about ninety seconds and it is not a decision framework. It is a deliberate interruption of fluency at the exact moment fluency is least trustworthy. Use it on the fast decisions, not the hard ones. The hard ones already get scrutiny.
